Georgia Young Republicans Support Charter Schools Bill

The Georgia Young Republicans (GYR) announced their unanimous support of HR1162, Charter Schools reform. For too long, Georgia has failed its children by subjecting them to a failed educational system. Ranked 48th in the nation in education, Georgia schools are losing accreditation, students are dropping out at an alarming rate, and the American Dream is fading for so many.

Cameron Fash, GYR Chairman, said, "Nothing can lift an individual out of poverty, lead to a well-paying job and ensure a bright future better than a good education."

This decision is not about school boards, teachers, or school systems; it's about the children. Fash added, "Our schools are failing, our children are paying the price, and if this legislation does not pass, our elected officials will have failed us."

GYR National Committeewoman Layla Shipman echoed Fash's comments.

"I have a daughter in school and her education is one of our family's highest priorities," Shipman said. "I want to ensure that my child, as well as all children in Georgia, have access to the best possible education so that they have a chance to succeed in life."

In the past month, local school systems have tried to close two charter schools that were performing higher than their local counterparts. For a state that is failing in education, why are we trying to close what is successful only to force our children to attend a failing school? If this is allowed to continue, an entire generation of Georgia students will find themselves unable to compete in the global economy, unable to find a job, and unable to provide for their families.

GYR Treasurer Meagan Hanson also expressed her support for this legislation.

"We cannot guarantee what path our children will take, or where they will end up, but we can take action to guarantee that their path will lead them in the right direction," she said.
