Coal is a fossil fuel formed by many layers of sediment. Coal is used as an energy source as the compressed carbon in the pressured material burns for much longer than other materials like wood. The coal industry is one of the largest suppliers of energy. Most of the electricity that is generated in the country comes from coal, second only to natural gas. The US has more coal than any other country and accounts for a total of 25% of the total coal available in the world. In the United States, 966 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity is generated from coal alone. Generating about 23.5% of the nation’s electricity needs, coal operations remain to be profitable to investors.
